Crucifixo 15

Rua do Crucifixo is part of the emblematic architectural plan of Baixa Pombalina (downtown) for the reconstruction of the city’s riverside area, devastated by the 1755 earthquake. Parallel to Rua do Ouro, it is the narrowest of this plan, a feature that protects it from the city’s alacrity. Like all buildings in this area, it shows great similarity in shape and volume, as well as in structural and decorative elements.

The exterior of the building keeps all the historic features.

There is a recreation of the spans lost over the years because of adaptations, recovering the striking rhythm of the architectural features.

On the ground floor, two proposed commercial spaces preserve the experience of this almost pedestrian street. The restoration of the stone arches takes them to their original state. To modernize the building’s habitability there is an elevator that connects all floors. Adapted before to work as offices, the apartments' typology is re-established, creating two two-bedroom apartments per floor.

The stonework of the chimneys, some existing, others destroyed, is restored and replaced in the new kitchens, recovering the memory of the Pombalino kitchens. The high ceilings, all the doors and the existing floor remain.
