Located in the Baixa Pombalina (downtown), in a set of buildings classified as Heritage and of Urban Relevance, the challenge arises to transform, adapt and reset a building full of history and charisma.  Following the premises of the Baixa Pombalina Safeguard Plan that establishes the protection of historic, archaeological, architectural and urban heritage, this project is born to merge the ancient and the modern.

The building’s exterior recovers all its Pombalino features. It was built during the reconstruction period of the city of Lisbon, in the aftermath of the great earthquake of 1755 that destroyed the lower part of the city. The building kept all its features: cornerstones and cornices, stonework and mansard roofs, dormer and bay windows, occasionally restoring unique characteristics that have changed over time.

Inside, a sense of time lapse leads to a casual modernization of the space. A glass-lined lift is installed and accessible from the common area of the building. This area is flooded with light coming through the new glass joinery.

The intervention in the apartments aims at their modernization, providing them with contemporary standards of habitability and comfort, yet preserving all the structural and architectural elements.

This building atmosphere takes us to a past era, still feeling the presence and comfort of contemporaneity.
