Sebastião Saraiva 59

In Lisbon, in the birthplace of commerce and the centre of the urban commotion sits the Sebastião Saraiva 59 apartment.

This historic and charismatic apartment used to house different uses and residents, but its original structure is almost untouched. There was a need to adapt its experience to the contemporary era, offering more privacy to the most intimate core of the house. The social area became wider and unique, yet keeping a certain fluidity between both areas of such different uses.

The existing space was divided into two compartments and its opening considered. During the construction phase, a partition wall (tabique) was found. Original and intact it is very representative of the ancient construction methods of the city and full of history. All the accumulation of later experiences is stripped out and the partition wall is kept, providing a sense of the old constructive method in a new modern era. This wall creates a casual separation within the social space, separating the living area from the cooking and meal area, differentiating leisure from private areas.

By redefining the areas, changing a three-bedroom apartment into a two-bedroom, provides a comfort zone much closer to the current way of living.

One bedroom becomes a master suite and the other has access to the common bathroom.
