Anjos 35

Embedded in an area of buildings classified as Heritage, integrated into an architectonic compound of Public Interest, this narrow building was rehabilitated following three dichotomies: public and private space, urban and natural, contemporary and traditional. Following these specific features, the building includes a set of boxes that form a courtyard in its centre, which provides a separation from the urban chaos surrounding it. This is where the tension caused by the separation applies: it creates a stronger spatiality, offering solidity, fluidity and the ability to overcome the emptiness.

The existing tiled façade creates a skin that envelops the boxes inside. Each box determines a floor and a unit that sometimes connects through permeable passages. These links create transitional spaces, crossing the void, where a patio occurs.

The creation of an inner courtyard grants moments of pause and fluidity.

The two separated volumes provide a sense of simplicity and allow a feeling of spatiality and wideness in its interior.

Despite these separate units, the building achieves completeness. Each entity strengthens its relationship with nature and the surrounding atmosphere.
