Since 1946, the German supermarket chain, ALDI, has sought to mark its position in the world. In 2006, it arrived in Portugal and began its expansion.

Located in a suburban area of Loures, within a very dense residential area, the lot allows the consolidation of a supermarket that provides not only products, but also a better experience of the space.

Given the requirements of the company for both the interior and exterior layouts, as well as the organization of space and materials used, a versatile and functional building is proposed, designed with the human element in mind.

The design of the entrance aims at avoiding congestion and keep fluidity. As the main entrance faces northwest, and the technical support area and the warehouse face south, the building is able to control the interior atmosphere and temperature.

Following the company’s evolution, the carrying out of a sustainable plan establishes the strategic orientation and construction of the building, paying special attention to materials and the use of energy resources.

The entire façade keeps the same features of the other supermarkets of the brand. It is cladded with phenolic panels, easy to maintain and offers good thermal balance. The traditional solid bricks clad the façade, as a reference to the original building. The interior space remains mostly an open space that can be easily adapted to emerging needs.

Stellaxius

Stellaxius focus on the development of companies and businesses. The company carries-out long-term sustainable solutions that transform people through technology and expertise.

With a multidisciplinary team and its activity based on teamwork, trust, value, responsibility, innovation and satisfaction, the use of space has to meet each evolutionary process.

Teamwork allows the creation of an open space, where communication flows and new intellectual processes emerge. Yet, with constant video conference calls, there was a need to offer a more private, accessible and convenient spot. This is how work booths materialize: two soundproofed work booths, but still opened into the workspace.

Two meeting rooms with multimedia resources are also proposed.

On the opposite side, there is the social area with a lounge and a pantry. There is also the corridor, a space of “critical thinking” that unites the two distinct areas - work and breaks.

Glass partitions help provide fluidity and cohesion of space, as well as a hierarchy of all working areas.

The use of the total height of the room conveys wideness to its interior. The definition of working and social areas is obvious, creating interstitial links that act as a guiding thread to unify all.

The use of materials such as fabric, glass, metal, vegetation and wood, provides variety and cohesion, and expands the senses.

Armazém 93

Located in an industrial plot, next to the main access to the city, a modular and versatile structure is conceived, capable of merging with the urban mesh, in which it sits.

Due to its privileged location and provided with both commercial and warehouse space, the building consists of two floors.

To keep the existing topography untouched and reduce excavation works, the steep slope is used to create a basement floor, with a side access via a ramp.

The building occupies the entire plot limit, keeping its symmetry with the surrounding buildings, which results in a simple rectangular, functional and adaptable shape.

Facing south and next to the main street, the main façade is glazed allowing light to enter and its adaptation as a storefront.

To manage the light intensity as well as the thermal equilibrium, a screen appears from the side of the building, providing shade at the peak of the sun.

The building includes a ventilated façade making it efficient and sustainable. Its metallic structure assigns simplicity and constructive speed.

The corrugated metallic sheet cladding used in the adjacent buildings is applied at the bottom, with the option of phenolic panels at the top. This symbiosis of materials creates the transition of the existing to the created, forming a seam marked by the windows. Thus, the building merges at the base while it stands out at the top.

Endemol

Endemol is a global television entertainment and media distribution company. It creates entertainment products adapted to each country and culture, achieving great impact with reality shows.

Unlike its location in central Lisbon, with typical urban features and a global, opaque and rigid hue, the interior appears transformed with colour, textures and shapes.

Following the company’s jovial and creative experience, the space created is metamorphic, wide and fluid, with marked distinctive spaces.

A main entrance features a wide, inviting, bold and challenging layout. A connecting corridor, featuring a reinterpretation of the television structure, contrasts with the workspace, leading to creativity and ambition. At the other entrance point, which is also the entrance of the administration board, there is a common living space and lounge.Bold colours and versatile and modular furniture, contrast with the dark walls, reminding a backstage.

The conceptual motto starts with a memory. After a television broadcast, an image is displayed with the common shades of any program. This image, inherent to television history keeps a connection to a foundation, as well as its adaptation to the company’s evolving image. The use of colours and primary forms, and the interpretation of sound and form, are an evolving, expressive and provocative combination that increases the cinematographic atmosphere of the space.
